Design Details

First issued in 2006, the Gold Buffalo revived James Earle Fraser’s legendary 1913 Buffalo Nickel design — an American classic celebrated for its bold, realistic detail.

The front of the coin features a right-profile portrait of a Native American. Fraser combined the facial characteristics of three real tribal leaders from the early 1900s to create this iconic composite — marking the first time a Native American was depicted on a U.S. coin.

Reverse:
The back of the coin displays an American bison, modeled after “Black Diamond,” a buffalo that once lived at New York’s Central Park Zoo. The powerful image captures the strength and spirit of the American frontier, with the bison standing proudly on a grassy mound.
